Tuesday, June 02 Arrive in Luanda (ANGOLA)

Upon arrival in Luanda, the capital of Angola, meet the guide and transfer to Thomson Art House or similar for check in. Have a free afternoon, dinner and overnight. (D)

Wednesday, June 03 Luanda

After breakfast, begin the day with a visit to the Palácio de Ferro (Iron Palace), a striking historical structure believed to have been designed by Gustave Eiffel, the visionary behind the Eiffel Tower and the internal structure of the Statue of Liberty. This architectural gem is a must see for design and history enthusiasts alike.

Next, enjoy a scenic drive past the Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, a charming colonial era church dating back to the late 17th century. Its whitewashed walls and classic design glimpse Angola’s Portuguese influenced past. Continue the cultural exploration with a stop at the Coin Museum and National Bank, where we can delve into Angola’s rich economic history through fascinating exhibits of historic coins and banknotes.

From there, head to the Memorial Agostinho Neto, an iconic monument honoring Angola’s first president. This dramatic structure doubles as a museum, providing valuable insights into the country’s post independence struggles, achievements and national identity.

Take a relaxing walk along Luanda’s Marginal, the scenic oceanfront boulevard. This stretch offers breathtaking sunset views and a captivating mix of colonial and contemporary architecture, perfect for photography or simply soaking in the city’s atmosphere. Thursday, June 04 Luanda – Miradouro da Lua – Kissama N.P

After breakfast, begin the day with a visit to Kifica Market, one of Luanda’s most vibrant local marketplaces. Bustling with activity, the market offers an authentic glimpse into everyday Angolan life. Wander through the colorful stalls filled with fresh produce, textiles and household goods, and enjoy engaging with friendly vendors and experiencing local culture up close.

Next, travel to the National Museum of Slavery, a profoundly moving site that sheds light on Angola’s role in the transatlantic slave trade. Housed in a 17th century building once used to hold enslaved people before they were shipped overseas, the museum offers powerful insights into a dark but important chapter of history.

Continue to a local arts and crafts market, where we will find various traditional handmade items from woven baskets and wood carvings to jewelry and textiles. It is the perfect place to pick up unique, locally crafted souvenirs.

Head to the breathtaking Miradouro da Lua (Moon Viewpoint) in the afternoon. This surreal landscape, carved over centuries by wind and rain erosion, features dramatic cliffs and formations resembling the moon’s surface. It is one of Angola’s most iconic natural wonders and a must see for photographers and nature lovers.

After lunch, drive south to Kissama National Park for check in, dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

Friday, June 05 Kissama National Park / Kwanza River

Start the day with an early morning safari drive through Kissama National Park, Angola’s premier wildlife conservation area. Accompanied by an experienced local guide, journey through open grasslands and baobab studded savannahs as you search for iconic African wildlife including elephants, giraffes, antelopes, waterbucks and various bird species. The early hours offer the best chance to witness animals in their natural habitat.

After the safari, return to the lodge for breakfast and some time to relax. Later, set out for the nearby Kwanza River. Embark on a peaceful boat cruise past lush riverbanks, mangrove forests and wildlife rich wetlands. Keep an eye out for hippos, crocodiles and exotic birds.

Enjoy a leisurely lunch at a riverside lodge or eco resort. Optional activities include kayaking or a nature walk. (B,L,D)

Saturday, June 06 Kissama National Park – Luanda – Lubango

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for a domestic flight to Lubango, capital of Huíla Province in southern Angola. Set in a green valley and watched over by the famous Statue of Christ, Lubango is known for its colonial heritage and culture.

Upon arrival, transfer to Pululukwa Lodge or similar for check in, dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

Sunday, June 07 Lubango – Chibia (Mumhuila Tribes)

The day is dedicated to the Mumhuila Tribe, a semi nomadic tribe that earns a living from agriculture and cattle breeding. The women coat their hair with oncula, a red paste made of crushed red stones mixed with oil and cow dung, then decorate their hairstyle with beads and cauri shells. They also wear large necklaces adorned with mollusks and beads indicating their marital and social status.

There will be encounters with two different Mumhuila groups, the Plain Mumhuila and the Mountain Mumhuila.

Enjoy lunch, visit the market and transfer to the lodge in Chibia for check in, dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

Monday, June 08 Chibia – Oncocua

Begin the day with a scenic drive to Oncocua. Stop en route at a local village and market. Tents will be set up for the night. (B,L,D)

Note Accommodation is in basic tents with a pillow and sleeping bag included and a separate toilet tent.

Tuesday, June 09 Oncocua (Tribal Encounters) – Lubango

Spend the morning immersed in local tribal culture and meet the Himba, Hakaona and Dimba groups. These semi nomadic cattle herders grow crops such as maize and millet and wear traditional clothing suited for the climate.

They are known for their jewelry and hairstyles, often covered in otjize paste or similar mixtures.

Transfer to Pululukwa Lodge or similar for check in, dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

Wednesday, June 10 Lubango – Garganta

Drive to the Leba Mountains to meet the Nguendelengo tribe. This isolated group lives in forested mountain regions and speaks the rare Nhaneca dialect.

They live in dwellings raised on tree trunks and are known for woodwork and decorative crafts.

Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

Thursday, June 11 Lubango – Virei (Mucubal Tribe)

After breakfast, travel to Virei to meet the Mucubal tribe. They are known for cattle breeding, agriculture and traditional practices.

Tents will be set up for the night. (B,L,D)

Friday, June 12 Virei – Namibe – Luanda

Drive through the Namib Desert, one of the oldest deserts in the world. It stretches over 1,200 miles along the Atlantic coast and is home to unique plant and animal life.

Enjoy a picnic lunch and visit a Mucubal cemetery.

Transfer to the airport in Namibe for a flight back to Luanda. Transfer to the hotel for check in, dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

Saturday, June 13 Luanda

After breakfast, visit the Mausoleum of Antonio Agostinho Neto, Fortaleza de Sao Miguel Museum and Our Lady of Nazareth Church.

Drive past the Monument of the Unknown Soldier and enjoy lunch on the peninsula.

Explore the governmental area of the city. Return to the hotel for overnight. (B,L,D)

Sunday, June 14 Luanda – Namibia

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight back to the US. (B)
